MLB DFS: Targets for 5/17
With so many pitchers and hitters to pay up for, MLB DFS options for tonight is going to be interesting. The Reds and Indians have a start time of 6:10 PM EST, which is not included in today’s article.
Jaime Garcia (STL vs. COL)
FanDuel: $8,900/DraftKings: $9,200
There are so many ways to go on pitching and it’s full of southpaws and higher priced players. I like Garcia in this spot against the Rockies at home. The Rockies are not a good team on the road and being a southpaw will help against lefty bats like Charlie Blackmon and Carlos Gonzalez. On the season Garcia has a 26.8% K rate and it jumps up to 37.1% against lefties. A really interesting stat for Garcia is that he has not given up any walks to left-handed bats, so Blackmon and Gonzalez are going to have to earn it at the plate tonight.
Cole Hamels (TEX @ OAK)
FanDuel: $10,400/DraftKings: $10,500
Hamels’ price is not ideal, and may be a tournament play for you because of where others will be spending up for tonight. He’s pitching at Oakland Coliseum, which is one of the best parks for pitchers. The A’s as a team have a 36.3% ground ball rate, and Hamels this season is at 52.7% for ground balls. Hamels should be able to keep the ball in the park tonight.
Yasmani Grandal (LAD vs. LAA)
FanDuel: $2,800/DraftKings: $3,300
Catcher is a position you may want to spend down at tonight because of other spots to pay up for. If Grandal gets the start, he’s in a favorable matchup against Jered Weaver while hitting in the middle of the order.
J.T. Realmuto (MIA @ PHI)
FanDuel: $2,900/DraftKings: $2,900
We don’t have the platoon here, but Realmuto and the Marlins have already faced opposing pitcher Vincent Velasquez this season and had some success. He’ll be hitting in the middle of the order with Velasquez being a righty, but righties can have success against him.
David Ortiz (BOS @ KC)
FanDuel: $4,300/DraftKings: $4,900
It’s hard to deny what Ortiz has doing here in his last season. Tonight, the Red Sox are facing Yordano Ventura, who has been volatile this season. Mistakes are something opposing pitchers can’t make against Ortiz, but the way the entire team has been producing runs, this could turn into a bullpen game early.
Byung-ho Park (MIN @ DET)
FanDuel: $3,800/DraftKings: $4,100
Park’s power is real and his price is starting to show it. He’s a tournament play because of the upside, but it might be tough with other pricey options. It’s still early in the season so teams may have not figured him out yet, so now might be the time to roster him if you think his production will decrease over the course of the season.
Robinson Cano (SEA @ BAL)
FanDuel: $4,000/DraftKings: $5,300
Cano is having an outstanding season, and being a lefty against Ubaldo Jiminez, in a hitter’s park makes one of the better plays overall. For the season against left-handed bats, Jiminez has a 2.13 WHIP, .469 BABIP, .586 slugging percentage, and .439 wOBA. With Altuve being considerably more on FanDuel, Cano would be an easier roster choice for the position.
Brian Dozier (MIN @ DET)
FanDuel: $3,000/DraftKings: $4,100
The Twins are facing Mike Pelfrey, who has not pitched well this season to say the least. Right-handed bats have success against Pelfrey so you can look towards Dozier for the position and in a Twins stack as well.
Trevor Plouffe (MIN @ DET)
FanDuel: $2,600/DraftKings: $3,600
There has to be some value somewhere, and I favor Plouffe tonight. As mentioned with Dozier the Twins are stackable but it’ll probably be a popular one.
Matt Carpenter (STL vs. COL)
FanDuel: $4,000/DraftKings: $4,600
The Cardinals are facing Chad Bettis tonight. He doesn’t give up many walks but Carpenter is a hitter who makes a lot of contact and can give Bettis a lot of trouble in the leadoff spot.
Corey Seager (LAD vs. LAA)
FanDuel: $4,100/DraftKings: $4,500
Seager is currently carrying a seven game hitting streak and has a chance at extending that against Weaver. His price is reflecting his production but if this turns out to be a high scoring game for the Dodgers, you don’t want to miss out on what Seager’s able to do while batting second in the order.
Brad Miller (TB @ TOR)
FanDuel: $2,800/DraftKings: $3,000
Miller has been hitting towards the top of the lineup and is a cheaper option at the position. The Rays are facing Marcus Stroman tonight, who does give up runs at times and Miller can be a source of fantasy points.
Mark Trumbo (BAL vs. SEA)
FanDuel: $3,700/DraftKings: $4,700
If you don’t want to spend on high-priced outfielders, Trumbo could be the slight cost savings you are looking for. The Orioles are facing Wade Miley, whose splits heavily favor right-handed bats. Trumbo has double home run upside and has a friendlier price on FanDuel.
George Springer (HOU @ CWS)
FanDuel: $4,200/DraftKings: $4,800
For just a little more on both sites, Springer is in a favorable matchup against Carlos Rodon. This season against lefties, Springer has a .682 slugging percentage, 1.143 OPS, .318 ISO, and .481 wOBA. Some say Rodon’s downturn this season has been the absence of former White Sox catcher, Tyler Flowers. If that’s the case, right-handed hitters should have success if Rodon can’t make the necessary adjustments.
Matt Kemp (SD vs. SF)
FanDuel: $3,000/DraftKings: $3,600
Kemp and the Padres are facing Madison Bumgarner at home tonight. Overall, Kemp hasn’t had much success against Bumgarner but Bumgarner hasn’t exaclty been sharp this season. It’s more of a gut call, but if someone on the Padres is going to be successful tonight, I like Kemp for it.
