MLB DFS: Targets for 5/9

(USATSI)

What a crazy weekend of baseball!  Bartolo Colon hit his first career home run, Bryce Harper reached base seven times on six walks and one hit by pitch, and Jake Arrieta was put in a position to get the loss in yesterday’s start.  We have almost a full slate of games for tonight that MLB DFS Targets will cover.

Pitchers

Jose Fernandez (MIA vs. MIL)

Moneyline: -230

Over/Under: 7 1/2

FanDuel: $10,800/DraftKings: $11,300

Fernandez and the Marlins are the second heaviest favorite on the slate.  The Brewers have a high strikeout rate and strikeouts are something that Fernandez is good at.  He’s also been good at minimizing the home run ball and with this game being played at Marlins Park, he’ll look to continue that to keep the Brewers scoring to a minimum.

Aaron Sanchez (TOR @ SF)

Moneyline: -125

Over/Under: 8

FanDuel: $7,100/DraftKings: $6,900

Sanchez has a favorable park shift in this game at AT&T Park.  He has pitched well so far this season and the Giants have been having a hard time lately scoring runs.  If Sanchez is able to be successful at Rogers Centre, he can take advantage of the Giants’ cold bats and have another good outing.

Other pitchers to consider: Jon Lester, (CHC vs. SD), Stephen Strasburg (WAS vs. DET), and Steven Matz (NYM @ LAD).

Catchers

Brian McCann (NYY vs. KC)

FanDuel: $3,100/DraftKings: $3,600

McCann and the Yankees will be facing righty, Chris Young, who has not been good this season.  As we know, left-handed bats against righties at Yankee Stadium are in play, and I like McCann as one of the better targets at the position.

Derek Norris (SD @ CHC)

FanDuel: $2,400/DraftKings: $2,800

If you’re looking for a punt option, Norris could be an interesting play depending on the wind factor and where he’s hitting in the lineup.  There’s the platoon here against Jon Lester, which is what you want when rostering Norris.

Other catchers to consider: Stephen Vogt (OAK @ BOS), and Welington Castillo (ARI @ COL).

First base

Anthony Rizzo (CHC vs. SD)

FanDuel: $4,900/DraftKings: $5,400

Rizzo has multi-hit games in the last five out of seven games which translates to his salary being the highest at the position on both sites.  The Cubs are facing right-hander, Cesar Vargas, who is seeing his first action in the majors this season, and the Cubs can take advantage of his inexperience.

Eric Hosmer (KC @ NYY)

FanDuel: $3,500/DraftKings: $4,600

Hosmer is another steady target at the position and the matchup here at Yankee Stadium is a good one.  He’s at a fair price and is currently riding a seven game hitting streak.  Opposing pitcher, Ivan Nova, hasn’t started a game since last season so the Royals could get to him early and make this a bullpen game.

Other first basemen to consider: Jose Abreu (CWS @ TEX), and Chris Davis (BAL @ MIN).

Second base

Jason Kipnis (CLE @ HOU)

FanDuel: $3,400/DraftKings: $3,900

Kipnis and the Indians are facing Mike Fiers, who could give up runs early and doesn’t pitch deep into games.  Kipnis with the platoon is always worth a look because of his power potential and his place in the batting order.

Derek Dietrich (MIA vs. MIL)

FanDuel: $2,700/DraftKings: $3,400 (third base eligible)

Dietrich will be easier to roster on FanDuel, and is a good lower priced option batting against Wily Peralta.  After serving as a pinch hitter to start the season, Dietrich has been starting games regularly and has been putting up strong splits against right-handed pitchers.

Other second basemen to consider: Rougned Odor (TEX vs. CWS), and Daniel Murphy (WAS vs. DET).

Third base

David Wright (NYM @ LAD)

FanDuel: $3,300/DraftKings: $4,400

Based on the matchup against southpaw, Scott Kazmir, Wright should have a nice fantasy night and his price is a lot more affordable on FanDuel.  In 13 games this season against lefties, Wright has a slugging percentage of .556, ISO of .222, and .437 wOBA.

Brandon Drury (ARI @ COL)

FanDuel: $3,900/DraftKings: $3,600 (outfield eligible)

Drury has been swinging a hot bat lately and he’s a fine option at the position if he gets the start at Coors Field.  His price is lower on DraftKings, which is where you might want to play him and pay up for bats at other positions.

Other third basemen to consider: Nolan Arenado (COL vs. ARI), and Jung Ho Kang (PIT @ CIN).

Shortstop

Jean Segura (ARI @ COL)

FanDuel: $3,700/DraftKings: $4,400 (second base eligible only)

Unlike teammate Drury, Segura is priced up on DraftKings (second base).  It’s a Coors Field game and Segura has been batting at the top of the order and that’s something to like with a middle infielder who has upside.  Opposing pitcher, Tyler Chatwood, has two losses this season and both of them come at home at Coors Field.

Trevor Story (COL vs. ARI)

FanDuel: $4,500/DraftKings: $5,100

The Rockies are the favorite and this game has a run total of 11.  Facing pitcher Archie Bradley, Story is the play at the position if you want to pay for it, and we already know about what he’s capable of doing at the plate. Bradley is being brought it for a spot start and he may not last long in the game.

Other shortshops to consider: Alcides Escobar (KC @ NYY), and Troy Tulowitzki (TOR @ SF).

Robinson Cano and Nelson Cruz

(Ross D. Franklin / Associated Press)

Outfield

Nelson Cruz (SEA vs. TB)

FanDuel: $3,500/DraftKings: $4,300

Cruz against a lefty is always appealing, but keep an eye out to make sure he’s in the lineup tonight.  If so, Cruz could be a nice way to target the home run ball with Cruz being a much stronger hitter against southpaws.

Carlos Gonzalez (COL vs. ARI)

FanDuel: $3,900/DraftKings: $5,000

With the platoon in this matchup, Gonzalez is the better play on FanDuel where he’s $600 less than Charlie Blackmon.  It’s tough to roster the Rockies away from home, so now is the time to take advantage of the park shift to their hitter friendly park.

Danny Santana (MIN vs. BAL)

FanDuel: $2,600/DraftKings: $2,600

There might be some rain so keep an eye out on this game.  Santana has been leading off and if you need salary relief, you can look to target him at the position.  He is the same price on both sites making him more of a value play on DraftKings, but Santana can certainly meet value on FanDuel as well.

Other outfielders to consider: Enrique Hernandez (LAD vs. NYM), David Peralta (ARI @ COL), Christian Yelich (MIA vs. MIL), and Franklin Gutierrez (SEA vs. TB).
