NBA DFS Playbook – 1/4

Russell Westbrook

The first Monday of the new year looks to be a good one in the world of NBA DFS. We have 10 games on the slate and a player that will be over 75% owned across the board. Couldn’t think of a better way to get back in to the swing of things, so let’s start this day off right and turn this into the best year yet.

*all of my prices are according to DraftKings.

Point Guard

Russell Westbrook ($alary is irrelevant)

Kevin Durant is out tonight, so everyone will be getting on Westbrook. There will be people fading him tonight but that’s just dumb. There’s a huge difference between a smart fade and a dumb fade. Shaun Livingston was a smart fade when Stephen Curry was out because he has a low ceiling. Westbrook is a dumb fade because he can put up 70 fantasy points on any given night. Pay up for him. Don’t be dumb. Don’t make bad life choices.

Isaiah Thomas ($7,800)

Avery Bradley is out tonight and the Celtics are playing the Nets, who also just lost Jarrett Jack. IT2 can drop 30 points on any given night and he makes for a perfect GPP play at his salary.

Shooting Guard

Evan Turner ($5,100)

Turner is one of my favorite DFS plays when I know he’s going to get a heavy dose of minutes. He’s a poor mans Draymond Green that does a little bit of everything. I think he’s a must play across the board and it’s very likely that he flirts with a triple-double.

C.J. McCollum ($8,100)

With no Damian Lillard still, McCollum is a plug and play. The Grizzlies struggle guarding the backcourt big time. This isn’t the Memphis teams of old. He can put up 50 fantasy points on any given night, and Portland’s offense runs through their guards. Love him tonight has a sneaky tournament play.

Small Forward

Paul George ($8,900)

George gets the nod here because this position is so bad tonight. Everyone will be chasing Draymond’s monster 87 point game. LeBron James is always a highly owned player as well, so George is someone you can get on the cheaper end of the elite players and he can easily finish as the number one guy tonight in DFS.

Joe Johnson ($4,600)

Johnson is a guy I will always be wrong on. I still think he can get it done at a high level, but he craps the bed some nights. Tonight is one of those nights where he is set up for a big game with no more Jarrett Jack. They’ll ned scoring from him and Thad Young, but I like Johsons’s price because it wont take much for him to him value.

Power Forward

Chris Bosh ($7,500)

I’m always hesitant of using Heat players on a back-to-back, but things set up nicely for Bosh tonight. Dwyane Wade looks to be slowing down some after a blowout last night. Bosh has hit at least 4x value in six straight games, and that exactly the floor you want in a guy for your cash games.

Serge Ibaka ($6,300)

Ibaka is a sneaky play tonight because everyone will be on Westbrook, and rightfully so, but people forget about him when Durant is out. He averages around 5 more fantasy points when KD is out, and that sets him up for around 5x value. His shot hasn’t been falling like you would hope, but he’ll get more opportunities to get it going tonight with him being more involved in the offense.

Center

Brook Lopez ($7,500)

Lopez has been balling over his last seven games. He’s hit at least 42 fantasy points in six of them, and the Celtics are not good against big men that have length. It’s never a great idea to stack two Nets in your lineup, but the upside is too great to pass up on Lopez and he is my go to guy in cash games not named Westbrook.

Jeff Withey  ($4,300)

I should clarify that I only like Withey if Derrick Favors is out tonight. I watched him at Kansas in college and when he played for the Pelicans the last few seasons. Withey is a guy that outworks people and has a decent post game that makes him a great tournament option tonight. He’s hit value in six straight games, and has hit for over 30 fantasy points in three out of his last four. Be sure to monitor this going into tonight.
