Fantasy Football: Jimmy G Time

How will he do in Brady's absence?

The ruling on “DeflateGate” has been made:

  • NFL suspends QB Tom Brady for four games
  • Patriots lose a 2016 1st round pick AND 2017 4th round pick
  • Fined $1 million (or a soda to us common folk)

Notice the first line –  Tom Brady suspended. Huge news obviously in the NFL, but it does have fantasy football bearings. With the absence of Tom Brady, second-year QB Jimmy Garoppolo will take the field going up against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Dallas Cowboys (this is of course barring a decrease in suspension after Brady appeals). It’s not like Garoppolo will have bad weapons either: Gronk, Edelman, LaFell, etc.

So I thought it would be a good idea to kind of dissect Jimmy G’s fantasy potential over these four games.

Week 1: Pittsburgh Steelers

Oh man, will the light be shining bright. NBC is giddy they get this game and also the return of Brady, I’d imagine.

In the season debut, Garoppolo will actually face a rather pedestrian Steelers secondary. They did add Bud Dupree in the draft, but after the big retirement of Troy Polamalu, there really isn’t that guy to look out for in the Steelers secondary. However, LeGarrette Blount (if by some chance the suspension is overturned) could be the guy in this game. The Patriots could ease Jimmy G in and let Blount run wild, but I still think Jimmy puts up respectable numbers against a secondary that I can’t imagine will be very good all season long. I think the Patriots ultimately lose this game.

Projection: 220 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INT

Week 2: Buffalo Bills

This is going to be a tough game for the Patriots. Another one in which I think they will lose. Jimmy G did actually take the majority of the snaps in the Patriots’ 17-9 loss against the Bills in Week 17, going 10 of 17 passing for 90 yards with no TDs and no INTs.

This is a stellar defense. They could give Jimmy fits and the running game as well.

I would be stunned if the Patriots score two touchdowns this entire game.

Projection: 200 yards passing, 0 TDs, 1 INT

Week 3: Jacksonville Jaguars

Obviously a very winnable game for the Patriots even without Brady, but imagine if the Jaguars DID win? Oh man. But I think the Patriots get their first “W” on the season here. Jacksonville is getting better on defense, but I really think this could be the one game in which we see Jimmy kinda ball out. This could actually turn in to a mini shootout!

Projection: 260 passing yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT

Week 5: Dallas Cowboys

Yep – the Pats have a bye week on Week 4. After that bye week they take on the Dallas Cowboys who I think walk away with this one ultimately. I think we could see a ton of volume from Jimmy in this game and (usually) volume = fantasy production. I think Darren McFadden (or whoever is the guy in Dallas come this time (could be Kory Sheets for all we know) next season) will have himself a game. Jimmy G produces good fantasy numbers on this week.

Projection: 310 passing yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs

Totals: 990 passing yards, 6 TDs, 4 INTs.

Am I crazy? Probably. But I’m a Jimmy G fan.

Go Jimmy G!
