Third Base Rankings: Roto

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Nathan Denette

When I ranked my second baseman I thought it couldn’t get any more ugly than that, but third base may have proven me wrong! We have the top end guys spanning the elite and the guys who easily could make that step, and then we hit a tricky tier where you’re balancing production with enough to risk to make me feel they are overvalued entering 2015.

I have the Adrian Beltre/Evan Longoria group in the five/six hole, but with their current ADP’s I can’t fathom me owning either of them, especially with the huge group of strong options that don’t have the same upside maybe but come at a much better cost. Where this group gets really messy is when you move out of the top 15 and there is just such limited upside (Semien and Bogaerts will be fine at 2B/SS but aren’t good enough for this position). The upside lies in the Cody Asche/Maikel Franco/Miguel Sano group who aren’t going to get enough playing time to move up a tier, but they have the talent to be decent options. Even Luis Valbuena could move up to top 25 if he wasn’t a platoon player.

As a quick reminder about using the tiers/rankings below:

  • I rank based on where I for see a player finishing the year
  • I don’t overly consider ADP into account when I rank
  • Just because Player 1 is ranked above Player 2 does not mean that I think he should be selected before him if you can get Player 1 five rounds late
  • I may consider taking Player 1 a round earlier than he is currently going to ensure I get him if I feel he is going to produce similar to a player going much higher.
