Second Base Rankings: Roto

Wow, does second base get ugly quick in 2015! After Kinsler at five there is a mash of possibilities without much excitement and some risk as your number one second base option. Then you drop into the middle infield-worthy group where there is some intriguing upside mixed in with boring consistency. And after that it, it’s cringe-worthily awful.

One glimpse of potential is Micah Johnson – who could win the starting second base job with the White Sox. His steals potential alone would see him jump up to around the Utley, Hill level. But outside of him, we aren’t left with much.

Second is traditionally seen as one of the positions that offers you a decent shot of steals, and while you have elite base stealers such as Jose Altuve and Dee Gordon, as well as decent options such as Brian Dozier and Jason Kipnis both offering 20 plus potential, the steals aren’t rampant this year. The issue with second base is there are a lot of guys who just offer solid production across a few categories but nothing stand out anywhere.

As a quick reminder about using the tiers/rankings below:

  • I rank based on where I for see a player finishing the year
  • I don’t overly consider ADP into account when I rank
  • Just because Player 1 is ranked above Player 2 does not mean that I think he should be selected before him if you can get Player 1 five rounds late
  • I may consider taking Player 1 a round earlier than he is currently going to ensure I get him if I feel he is going to produce similar to a player going much higher.
