Post-Combine 2015 IDP Only Mock Draft

Dante Fowler Jr

Imagine that there was a twist to the NFL Draft and there was such a thing of two first-round drafts; and if you’re confused, I’m talking about having one first-round with offense only then follow that up with an IDP only draft.  That would make things very interesting but with teams at the top grabbing all the value there, this will never happen though, just like Anna Kendricks and I; we’ll never happen but that’s O.K.  If you’ve been following me prior to Fake Pigskin, then you might be familiar with my IDP Only Mock draft, if not you can find last year’s one (it’s horrible though) here.

What I do with these IDP Mocks is look at team needs, how could I make them better and a possibility of where these rookies will actually fall come draft day, better yet I look into the “fit” as well.  I could’ve gone many directions on some of these picks, so if you got any feedback please feel free to chat with me on Twitter (@IDPwithBEE_8o8).  I haven’t done any rookie rankings yet and this IDP only Mock doesn’t reflect my rankings, stay tuned for that though.

PICK TEAM PLAYER POSITION NOTES
TBB LEONARD WILLIAMS DL Could you imagine TBB rolling out McCoy and Williams next to each other? They’d need at least one solid pass rusher from the ends though, but Williams would definitely beef up the front four and wreck havoc as McCoy draws the attention a la Aaron Donald type-a year from Williams.
TEN VIC BEASLEY EDGE Many would probably put Gregory here and with good reason. I personally like Beasley and think he’ll be a monster for the TEN defense that needs all the help they can get from a pass rushing perspective. Beasley is going to be great for Horton/LeBeau.
JAC DANTE FOWLER, JR. EDGE Fowler ends up staying in Florida and helps the Jaguars with their pass rush. He’d start right away as the DE opposite Clemons or he could even stand up and play strong-side LB for Jacksonville. Definitely heading in the right direction defensively as the pieces are coming together.
OAK BUD DUPREE EDGE Many could argue Bud being the second IDP taken in this draft and it’s very hard to argue against that. So with that being said, OAK gets a steal with Dupree here as they’ll be able to pair him up with Khalil Mack and Justin Tuck to form a solid trio of pass rushers. Dupree is special, OAK got a gift here and they’ll continue to build in the right direction.
WAS RANDY GREGORY EDGE NOW we get the Gregory pick and Redskins fans are excited, right? With Orakpo more than likely gone (free agency) and they don’t know what they have in Murphy yet, they’d be able to plug in Gregory opposite Kerrigan and have a solid edge rush.
NYJ MARCUS PETERS CB Put his “off-field” issues aside, Peters is arguably the most complete corner in this draft. He can do just about anything and has solid ball skills, on the taller side (6’0) and physical/strong. He’ll definitely help the Jets as they had numerous problems in the secondary last season, say hello to their new franchise CB1.
CHI MALCOM BROWN DL It’s obvious the Bears need a ton of help on defense, and now that they’re moving into a 3-4 scheme they need the right personnel. To help aid in the right direction, starting in the trenches will help and Brown is a beast there. Brown will definitely create chaos behind the LOS and disrupt the run game.
ATL SHANE RAY EDGE ATL needs help in the pass rush department, his quickness and pass rush ability will help the Falcons. Last year’s rookie, Ra’Shede Hagemen, came on late in the seaosn so that’s a positive sign because that could give ATL two solid pass rushers.
NYG ERIC KENDRICKS LB Fear no more Giants fans, your franchise MLB has arrived in the name of Eric Kendricks.   Ever since NYG lost Pierce, nobody has been able to man the middle of the defense and NYG has struggled. Kendricks can play against the run, drop back into coverage and get after the QB.
STL OWA ODIGHIZUWA DL I look on the board, I check out the depth chart of the Rams and when Chris Long went out last year they struggled to get any sort of pass rush opposite Quinn. That problem should be no more as Owa will give that pass rush in rotation and the Rams will boslter one of the top D-Line’s in the league. Could you just imagine –Quinn, Donald, Brockers, Langford, Long and Owa — I feel opposing QB’s already trembling.
MIN PAUL DAWSON LB Many are only paying attention to Dawson’s off-field issues, or his poor combine performance. My thing is watching tape and he stands out on the field during games. Kind of in the Lavonte David area, prospect-wise, and can definitely be MIN’s future MLB/OLB and have one of the better 1-2 punches with Barr and Dawson.
CLE DANNY SHELTON DT CLE continues to build that defense. I could’ve gone in the edge rushing direction here but it’s not a bad idea to beef up the front line as well. With the lone bright spot being Desmond Bryant, the Browns could use the presence that Shelton will bring. He’s not that athletic or blows you away at anything but he’s stellar, he’ll command a lot and he’ll be their “Wilfork-ish” player in the middle.
NOS LORENZO MAULDIN EDGE Flying under the radar right now but definitely could pick up steam come actual draft day but Mauldin would be best suited as a 3-4 edge rusher and NOS is in need of one. With a very shitty cap situation, they might as well continue to build their defense thru the draft, starting with Mauldin and hoping the defense takes a turn in 2015.
MIA BENADRICK MCKINNEY LB Dolphins have had all sorts of linebacker problems, and the poor signings of Ellerbe and Wheeler have come back to bite them in the ass. There where a couple bright spots with Jelani Jenkins and Koa Misi improving, but let’s face it, they’re not going to get the job done. Getting McKinney here solidifies their MLB problems and gives a solid pairing along Jelani. McKinney is another 3-down LB in this draft and will bring the heat.
SF LANDON COLLINS SS Can you believe Landon fell all the way to 15? Most say he’s a top 10 talent, but I don’t see it. But, in this IDP draft the 49ers get a solid pick here with Collins as they continue to bring in talent. Collins is a solid in-the-box safety, and will definitely provide support in the run game but hopefully Ward develops already so Collins doesn’t have to drop back into coverage often.
HOU ARIK ARMSTEAD DL If HOU gets the Arik that played well in the national title game, they’ll have a helluva line up front next to Watt. As much as Watt demands all the attention, that’ll have to change sooner than later as Arik will disrupt the opposing team as well.
SDC JALEN COLLINS CB Chargers need all sorts of help but nowhere near as bad as the secondary. Jason Verrett has been impressive when healthy but after him? We have nobody, unless Flowers resigns. Collins brings that shutdown corner potential for San Diego.
KCC KEVIN JOHNSON CB Chiefs could go Safety or even Linebacker here but given their question marks at CB, might as well go after one of the under the radar CB’s in the draft. Johnson is lean but isn’t afraid to throw down. Once he bulks up more, he’ll be solid against the run but is a solid tackler in space. Quick feet and good ball skills, Johnson will help the Chiefs secondary out. This move will also move Parker to FS full-time to fill-in for Berry.
CLE RONALD DARBY CB If Skrine leaves via free agency, the Browns feel like they won’t lose a step with acquiring Darby. Darby is fast and plays with instinct and pretty good awareness. He’d become their nickel corner for now or he’ll give DeSir competition in camp to be named starter opposite Joe Haden.
PHI PJ WILLIAMS CB aggressive corner and ability to be a shutdown corner, Williams will definitely be a godsend for the Eagles as they start off their rebuild of that awful secondary.
CIN SHAQ THOMPSON LB Solid versatile player that’ll definitely help out the Bengals here. They battled injuries last season and didn’t have any depth, Lamur finally played nearly a full-season and Maualuga is only valuable against the run. Burfict has been in and out of the lineup because of injuries and concussions, so the Thompson pick fits as he could play the WILL or MLB if needed, but this pick could move Burfict into the MLB spot.
PIT TRAE WAYNES CB Speed, speed and more speed – that’s what Trae will bring with him to Pittsburgh. Waynes has a knack to use his hands often and that’ll have to change once he’s in the big leagues. Without a doubt though Waynes can become PIT’s CB1 now and the future.
DET EDDIE GOLDMAN DT Stating the obvious here as the Lions need to address their DT position as both Suh and Fairley are free agents and unsure if both or either will return. Grabbing Goldman here helps beef up the middle again.
ARI ELI HAROLD EDGE Harold brings some solid rushing skills from the edge, something Cardinals missed bad as Abraham got older, and injuries occurred. Can become ‘Zona’s “Bruce Irvin” type player, which even in rotation can be a solid move.
CAR BYRON JONES CB Jones set the record straight at the combine with his 12’3″ broad jump, then he showed off his vertical but he’s also a pretty solid CB as he has the speed and ball skills to succeed. He’d be a solid pairing with Bene as CAR would have two young corners on the rise.
BAL JAQUISKI TARTT FS Tartt is a SS that the Ravens have been searching for, if they bring back Will Hill then he can cover the field while Tartt does what he does best, get in the box and lay the wood. In an IDP would this would be ideal for Tartt as he’d vouch for snaps from the get go because Matt Elam isn’t anything special.
DAL DENZEL PERRYMAN LB Perryman can become a very good LB, but didn’t stand out on tape for me but when he did you see traits of a franchise MLB. Has the speed and ability to drop back into coverage, needs to read plays better and be involved in plays more but that’ll come and with all the question marks right now in DAL in regards to the LB spot, Perryman is worth the pick as back-up to Sean Lee.
DEN JORDAN PHILLIPS DT Phillips is a big body in the middle and the Broncos are figured to lose Knighton, so they find his replacement here.
IND GEROD HOLLIMAN FS Holliman had a pretty damn impressive 14 interceptions last season, Colts just lost LaRon Landry and Adams is a FA so they need help at the safety position. Holliman would give the Colts a franchise Safety behind Vontae Davis and Greg Toler, Colts get a day-one starter here.
GBP STEPHONE ANTHONY LB Stephone has risennto the scene, but there’s a number of folks that have taken notice prior to the combine. I watched some film on Anthony and came away impressed, has the potential to be a 3-down LB and is a downhill attacker, quick and strong. The Packers have finally figured they needed a change at ILB, already released Hawk and who knows who else is next but grabbing Anthony here solidifies their ILB spot for years.
SEA ERIC ROWE CB/S Rowe fits the mold of the Seahawks defense, with Earl Thomas recovering from a torn labrum injury, if he’s out for a while then Rowe could fit right in and play FS for the Seahawks, if not he can move to CB and is a pretty good zone coverage CB. Has the ability to make play on the ball.
NEP CARL DAVIS DL Davis has some serious power to him and definitely fits the mold of the Patriots defense, if Easley can get healthy and they’d have a pairing of Davis/Easley that would be scary for opposing O-Lines. Has good hand work, spin move to disengage from contact and good IQ from point of attack, the rich get richer here with Davis.
