NXT Takeover: Rival – Rundown and Review

NXT Takeover: Rival is an event that I was pretty excited to see. NXT has been a nice wrestling alternative to the traditional WWE action. Did it live up to the hype? Here are my thoughts

Hideo Itami vs. Tyler Breeze

Winner: Hideo Itami

My Thoughts: Great opening match. Plenty of hard hitting action. I absolutely love Itami and I think he has a bright future if WWE gives him a chance.

No Disqualification Match: Bull Dempsey vs. Baron Corbin

Winner: Baron Corbon

My Thoughts: Average. Had an old school big man match feel to it to start off but to me the match kind of fizzled out towards the end, and ended too quick.

NXT Tag Team Championship Match: Lucha Dragons vs. Blake & Murphy

Winner: Blake & Murphy

My Thoughts: Not bad. Several cool moves and false finishes from both teams. I’m not a huge fan of Blake & Murphy, but considering the tag team division in both NXT and WWE, they are near the top options.

#1 Contender Tournament Final: Finn Balor vs. Adrian Neville

Winner: Finn Balor

My Thoughts: Slow paced match to start reminding me of the 80’s and early 90s Main Event grind out matches with a couple of high spots here and there. The action did pick up towards the end though. Overall a pretty good match.

NXT Women’s Championship Fatal Four Way Match: Charlotte (C) vs. Bayley vs. Sasha Banks vs. Becky Lynch

Winner: Sasha Banks

My Thoughts: Really surprising match. I didn’t have high hopes but the match was very entertaining. Very physical matchup from all four competitors.

NXT Championship Match: Sami  Zayn (C) vs. Kevin Owens

Winner: Owens Via TKO

My Thoughts: AWESOME MATCH!  A TKO Victory for Owens. First time i can remember seeing one of those. These guys left it all in the ring just as I expected. Several brutal moves from both Owens and Zayne. This match made me remember why I started watching Pro Wrestling!

My Final Overall Thoughts: This show represented what pro wrestling is all about. You had a little bit of everything on the show tonight but most importantly good hard hitting WRESTLING. The story lines were great and this crop of upcoming superstars looks to be promising for the WWE’s future. If I had to nit pick something it would be the amount of false finishes used. However ending the NXT Title Main Event match with a TKO victory more than made up for it.
