NFL Picks Against the Spread: Super Bowl 49 Props

(USATSI)

Super Bowl 49 props add an extra element that can bring in some craziness or intrigue that even non-football people can get behind. Every year Las Vegas puts out props to add extra items for bettors and increase their handle (how much money they can make). Some of these props will feature traditional items like Super Bowl MVP, first team to score and how many touchdowns Tom Brady may throw. If you want to get off the rails a bit, you can bet on how long the National Anthem will take, what Katy Perry will wear or the color of the Gatorade.

I will break down a few of my favorite props and some of the more popular ones. Even if you are not in a position to be these props for real cash, creating a prop sheet for your Super Bowl party can add excitement.

Super Bowl MVP

Betting on the Super Bowl MVP can add an extra element in the game even if your favorite team may not be playing. Having a general idea of how the game will play out and who will win helps make these decisions. Check out my pick for the game if you need some advice.

Typical contenders

Quarterbacks tend to have the ball the most and are relied upon heavily. They are typically the focal point of the offense and the general public knows them. Thus they have the shortest odds.

Tom Brady – 9/5
Russell Wilson – 7/2

Going beyond the quarterbacks is where the value is. These players give bettors the opportunity to risk less money with the possibility of winning more.

Marshawn Lynch and Rob Gronkowski are key to what their teams do on offense and have a chance to impact the game significantly.

Marshawn Lynch – 5/1
Rob Gronkowski -9/1

Outside of the usual names, a few players i like:

Kam Chancellor – 25/1
Richard Sherman – 25/1
Julian Edleman – 16/1
Shane Vereen – 66/1
Darrelle Revis – 33/1

Total Passing Yards – Tom Brady 260.5

Over (-130)
Under (Even)

Take the over in this one despite having to lay a little more. Even in the two Super Bowls against the Giants that were low scoring Brady still amassed over 260 passing yards.

Will Russell Wilson score a Rushing TD in the game?

Yes (+195)
No (-250)

This seems like a slam dunk. Wilson keeping on a read option, running a boot or just scrambling and ending up in the end zone is very realistic. And you’re getting almost 2 to 1 odds.

Interceptions thrown by Tom Brady and Total interceptions. These bets should be made together. You can make similar bets with Russell Wilson and Patriot defenders.

Richard Sherman Total interceptions .5

Kam Chancellor Total interceptions .5

Over (+300)
Under (-400)

Earl Thomas Total interceptions .5

Over (+250)
Under (-325)

Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas are my favorites to get an interception. Both have good odds and could get a interception if Brady gets frustrated and forces a throw down the middle of the field or as time expires.

There has been a safety as the first or last score of the game in the last three Super Bowls. While it may be fools gold at this point its still worth taking a shot on.

Will there be a safety in the game?

Yes (+550)
No (-900)

The first score of the game will be a safety.

Seahawks (33/1)
Patriots (33/1)

The last score of the game will be a safety.
