College Football Picks Against the Spread: College Football Playoff

(Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports)

The first ever College Football Playoff will crown its champion Monday night. The game will feature the one loss Oregon Ducks against the one loss Ohio State Buckeyes and will take place at Jerry World in Dallas, Texas.

This Ohio State Buckeyes come into this game as the 4 seed. They grabbed the last spot over TCU and Baylor, teams some felt were more deserving. Almost shockingly this game doesn’t feature a SEC team, which is the first time since 2005. A team from the SEC had won seven straight until last season when Florida State won. Oregon comes into this game as the two seed but from a PAC 12 that hasn’t garnered the national praise until recently. Either it will be a strong statement for whichever team and conference wins the College Football Playoff.

Ohio State Buckeyes +7 vs Oregon Ducks

The Ohio State Buckeyes come into this game after an impressive Sugar Bowl performance. Despite starting down 21-6, Ohio State rallied and won 42-35. The Buckeyes gave the Tide a short field on a few drives early in the game making the score not indictive of how the game was going.

The Oregon Ducks head to Dallas, after putting it on the defending National Champion Florida State Seminoles. The Ducks defense made plays and the offense was impressive winning 59-20. Oregon owned the game for four quarters.

Ohio State will need to do two things against the Ducks if they want to win Monday night. On offense they will need to run the ball with Ezekiel Elliott who has almost 1500 yards, since assuming the majority of the carries. In the last two games against Wiconsin and Alabam, Elliot rushed fro 450 yards. Its one the best ways to attack the Oregon defense. In addition, an effective Elliot will make things much easier on quarterback Cardale Jones, and keep Marcus Mariota and the high flying Ducks on the sidelines. On defense, they will need to stay at home, not fall misdirection plays Oregon may employ. They will also need to collapse the pocket on Mariota and not let him make the special plays he’s know for.

For Oregon to win on Monday night, the offensive line must play well and provide Mariota with time to make plays. Ohio State has some monsters along the defensive line that can cause havoc. Mariota must play with the calm and poise he has show during his time at Oregon. If Mariota has time, it could be a very long day for Ohio State. On defense, the pass rush must put pressure on Cardale Jones. Consistent pressure will help an Oregon secondary that is playing without its best corner back, Ifo Ekpre-Olomu. If Ohio State wide receivers can get behind the Oregon secondary, it may be a long day.

Im going to take Ohio State in this spot, not only with the spread but straight up. Urban Meyer is 15-5 against the spread as an underdog. He is 5-0 during his time at Ohio State as underdog, winning outright in every one.

I expect his experience in National Title games to be a huge factor. I think it will be a close game that comes down to the end but the Buckeyes will win the game and the first College Football Playoff.

If you want a few more bets to place, take a look at the total, which currently sits at 75.5 and rising. I would wait until as close to kick as possible, as it should continue to rise. Take the under in the first half and game. The players will have nerves to start and this game should fly under. The last seven years have featured only four total touchdowns in the first quarter.

Enjoy the game!
