College Football Picks Against the Spread: Bowl Season

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Bowl Season is upon us!!!! With bowl season comes ridiculous sponsors, interesting match ups and showcases for teams that don’t typically get national television games. When picking bowl games, keep in mind these games can mean different things to different teams. Some teams missed out on the College Football Playoff and may be less interested. Other teams have players that are focused on the NFL Draft and not their final college game. Enjoy all the games with an adult beverage or 50, find unique ways to watch, and make money, even if you are taking from family or friends during the holidays

I picked both games in the College Football Playoff, as well as four other bowl games where I felt the number was skewed too far.

Make sure you follow my twitter account where I will post other games I happen to like. I already gave out UL Lafayette +1 and Utah -3 or 3.5 (Winners!) Feel free to tweet me if you want input on certain games.

For the College Football season I went 44-31-2 against the spread.

Now lets pick some games!

College Football Playoff

Amari Cooper scores a td

Sugar Bowl
Ohio State Buckeyes +9.5 v Alabama Crimson Tide

Before I get into this game, i must mention I am a passionate Ohio State Buckeye fan and thus my judgement may be skewed. That said, I attempted to take any bias out while making this pick. The Ohio State defense is one of the fastest and most athletic defenses in recent years. Joey Bosa is a real difference maker. If Ohio State wants to stay in this game they must slow the Alabama rush attack. This is the same Buckeye defense that shut down Melvin Gordon, arguably the best running back in College Football, in the Big 10 title game. They must have a similar performance in this game. If the Tide can establish the run, the play action game will open up and Amari Cooper will find himself in the end zone probably several times. For Ohio State, Cardale Jones must be ready to overcome some adversity and pressure. The Buckeyes will likely be down at some point and he must make a couple big throws at key times. Ezekiel Elliott must provide balance to the Ohio State offense. If the Alabama defense can get to Jones and slow the rush attack, it will be a long day for Ohio State. Alabama will win this game but it will a competitive game with the Buckeyes leading in the second half.

Marcus Mariota

Rose Bowl
Florida State Seminoles +9 v Oregon Ducks

This game has all the makings of a highly entertaining, shootout, that comes down to a final drive, with the game on the line. Each side features a Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks Marcus Mariota the 2014 winner and Jameis WInston who won the trophy last season. While Florida State hasn’t exactly been impressive this season, they will show up in this game. They must start faster than usual to avoid being avalanched by the Duck offense. Not having Ifo Ekpre-Olomu will be a big loss for Oregon. Florida State must utilize tight end Nick O’Leary and run the ball effectively. This will help keep the high-flying Ducks on the side lines. Oregon will win this game, but it will be inside the nine-point spread.

Samaje Perine

(USATSI)

Russell Athletic Bowl
Oklahoma Sooners -3.5 vs Clemson Tigers

The Oklahoma Sooners come into this game after losing to Oklahoma State at the end of the season. They will want to erase the bad taste from their mouth. Samaje Perine is poised to have a monster game. This will be the game that puts him in the conversation for the Heisman Trophy next season. Quarterback Deshaun Watson is out for this game and Cole Stout will start. Watson is the versatile quarterback that makes the Clemson offense go. Stout will see pressure all day and will make a few mistakes. I expect Oklahoma to win and win big in this game, easily covering the 3.5 point spread.

Texas Bowl
Arkansas Razorbacks -6 v Texas Longhorns

The Arkansas Razorbacks come into this game winning two of their last three. They shut out both LSU and Ole Miss. Their defense is loaded and will be ready for this game. On offense they Razorbacks will run the ball all day. Texas will rely on quarterback Tyrone Swoopes to have a shot in this game. If you saw the game against TCU, you know how this game will play out. Arkansas will do many of the same things TCU did. I expect Arkansas to win by double digits in this game even with this game being in Houston.

Tyler Lockett and Curry Sexton

(Scott Sewell-USA TODAY Sports)

Alamo Bowl
Kansas State Wildcats +1 v UCLA Bruins

This game features a Kansas State game that will be focused and a UCLA team that continues to be inconsistent. The Bruins best players, including quarterback Brett Hundley are going to be hearing their name called by the NFL Commissioner come May. They will be focused on avoiding injuries in this game. I expect the Wildcats to win this game outright. I suggest waiting on this game as the number started out with the Wildcats as a 3.5 point favorite. UCLA money is pouring in and the number likely moves more. The more value you can get on Kansas State the better.

Connor Cook

(Mike Carter-USA TODAY Sports)

Cotton Bowl
Michigan State Spartans +3 v Baylor Bears

The Baylor Bears won a share of the Big 12 and felt like they would be among the four teams in the College Football Playoff. Instead they are going to be in the Cotton Bowl. This feels like a game they don’t take as serious as they should. Michigan State, like Kansas State, are incredibly well coached, play hard on defense and will have quarterback Connor Cook back next season. I expect the Spartans to play well and focused in this game. I expect them to not only cover but get the outright win.
