The Boston Celtics agreed to trade Rajon Rondo to the Dallas Mavericks for Brendan Wright, Jameer Nelson, Jae Crowder, and future first and second round draft picks.

What this means for fantasy implications is that Nelson will be slated to take over the starting role for the Celtics. Wright and Crowder will provide depth at the position. This bodes well for Marcus Smart owners for when he comes back. Smart will be back within the next couple of games. As of right now, he is questionable to return Friday against the Timberwolves.

For the Mavs, this immediately boosts their offense and will present more value for Monta Ellis. He will be able to play off the ball more and create his own shots. Dirk Nowitzki benefits because it allows for more isolated matchups, and he doesn’t have to drive to the lane as often because of Rondo’s ability to score.

Personally, I believe the Celtics will be looking to shop Jeff Green as well. Green has a player option for next season, and it doesn’t seem like he is going to re-sign with the Celtics. As for the moving pieces that the Celtics are getting, they aren’t getting much in return outside of the draft picks. Brandan Wright’s contract expires at the end of this season, so he was an expiring contract they were looking to take on. Jameer Nelson has a player option for next season, so that is to be seen if he will take it. It is definitely too early to tell. Jae Crowder has a qualifying offer for next season, but it costs nothing. The Celtics are clearly looking to get younger and build for the future.
