Adam’s Sneaky Starts Week 9: Martavis Bryant Flexing

By: Adam Cook (@fantasy_schnerd)

Bye week hell is hitting in Week 9, but I enjoy these weeks as more creativity comes into play when setting your lineups. No automatically starting Calvin Johnson, Julio Jones, Sammy Watkins, or Jordy Nelson this week my friends. There are a few emerging players who I will be starting in my deep leagues with multiple bye week players. My favorites are Martavis Bryant and Charles Sims this week and I will tell you why right here. My start percentages are based off the Yahoo Fantasy Football game and were accounted for on Wednesday evening.

Charles Sims- RB- Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3% Started)

Sims is likely to make his season debut in Week 9 and the Buccaneers have been anxiously awaiting his play making ability. Bobby Rainey is likely to start, but I envision Sims seeing 10-15 touches this week. Rainey is not built for a full workload and was a running back inherited by Lovie Smith. They made a priority to reach to draft Sims in the 3rd round. They traded two starters at the trade deadline proving they are focused on talent evaluation for 2015. The Browns run defense has been gashed the last few weeks with Denard Robinson even reaching 100 yards two weeks ago. They give up the 12th most points to running backs. Charles Sims is a must pickup in redraft leagues and is a solid flex play this week for teams in need.

Bold Prediction: 8 carries- 47 yards- 1 touchdown- 4 receptions- 36 yards

Martavis Bryant- WR- Pittsburgh Steelers (22% Started)

Bryant is emerging as the No.2 threat in Pittsburgh behind Antonio Brown. He is currently splitting snaps with Markus Wheaton, but he is badly out performing and I expect his role to keep growing. He had 5 and 7 targets over the last two weeks totaling 3 touchdowns. The 6-4 rookie wide receiver from Clemson is an imposing threat in the red zone and Ben Roethlisberger likes big WR’s. Bryant is in the mold of former Big Ben favorite Plaxico Burress. The Ravens are without top corner Jimmy Smith this week and they allow the 6th most points to wide receivers. He is a top 25 play in standard leagues this week.

Bold Prediction: 6 receptions- 73 yards- 1 touchdown

Jarvis Landry- WR- Miami Dolphins (1% Started)

The San Diego pass defense looks solid on paper, but they have really been struggling the last couple of weeks. Landry is the 2nd option in the passing game behind Mike Wallace with Charles Clay getting healthier and Brian Hartline being an afterthought. The Chargers corners are banged up with Jason Verrett and Brandon Flowers questionable to play. The Dolphins will likely have to keep throwing the ball to keep up with the high powered Chargers offense. He has 5 targets or more in 4 out of the past 6 games. I like him to catch 5 passes and find the end zone this week.

Bold Prediction: 5 receptions- 54 yards- 1 touchdown

Lorenzo Taliaferro- RB- Baltimore Ravens (19% Started)

One of the surer things in fantasy football is Lorenzo Taliaferro getting chances at short yardage touchdowns. He isn’t much of an option in PPR leagues, but could be a solid flex play in standard settings. Bernard Pierce is now a weekly deactive player leaving him as the clear big back in the red zone. Justin Forsett is battling a minor knee injury opening the door for more touches. Ravens and Steelers matchups are historically blood baths which bodes well for the Ravens battering ram. He had 2 touchdowns at the goal line last week and I wouldn’t doubt that he can find another score in Week 9.

Bold Prediction: 10 carries- 42 yards- 1 touchdown- 1 reception- 8 yards

Adam’s Secret Undercover Special

Stedman Bailey- WR- St. Louis Rams (0% Started)

Brian Quick is out for the year opening up a lot of targets and opportunities available alongside Kenny Britt. Britt has been unimpressive this year and Tavon Austin is strictly a slot receiver. Stedman Bailey is a more exciting player than Chris Givens. I like Bailey to fill that starting role and he had 2 receptions for 33 yards in replacement of Quick last week. The 49ers allow the 11th most fantasy points to wide receivers and the Rams will have to air it out as the 49ers run defense is very strong. Bailey is my ultimate sleeper to post decent stats in Week 9.

Bold Prediction: 4 receptions- 57 yards- 1 touchdown
