NFL Picks Against the Spread: Week 9, 2014

Tom Brady and Peyton Manning

Just when i thought it couldn’t get any worse for NFL Picks Against the Spread column, i outdid myself going a whopping 0-5. Wow am I good at this or what?

My ability to pick games continues to be awful this season. This can only mean one thing, go against whatever I say. Had you done a week ago you would have been 5-0. If i picked your team, i apologize in advance.

Week 9 features an interesting slate of games with playoff implications. The best game of the weekend is Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos going to Gillette Stadium to take on Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. It also features one of my favorite match ups that is always chalked full of hard hits and explosive when the Baltimore Ravens take on the Pittsburgh Steelers.

>Upset Alert 1-7

New England Patriots +3 vs Denver Broncos

Anytime Peyton Manning and Tom Brady meet up, it instantly becomes must see television. This has the potential to be the last time these two match up. The Broncos have been steam rolling teams this season but face a tough road matchup against a Patriots team that has played better on defense. They clearly have the offense rolling, including Rob Gronkowski who exploded for three touchdowns a week ago. The Broncos will probably win this game but the final score will be a less than a field goal.

San Diego Chargers +1.5 at Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins are a team that unlike other teams, tends to play much better on the road where they are 3-1. While at home, they are just 1-2. The Chargers head into Miami to take on a Dolphins team that is better but remains inconsistent. The Chargers are among the AFC’s best teams and need to continue to win games to assure a wild card spot. Despite the injuries, the Chargers should not only cover but win this game outright.

Philadelphia Eagles -2 at Houston Texans

It took a perfect throw a week ago from Carson Palmer for the Cardinals to beat the Eagles. While it was a tough loss, I expect a big bounce back from Philadelphia this week. They head into Houston to take on JJ Watt and an impressive Texans defense. That said, Ryan Fitzpatrick is still the running the show for the offense. I expect Fitzpatrick to make too many mistakes for the Texans to be able to win or even cover at home. The Eagles offense will look strong once again and cover this game fairly easily.

Baltimore Ravens -1 at Pittsburgh Steelers

This is another clash that brings intrigue and excitement every season. Both teams bring tough defense and impact plays to this game. After turning things around two weeks ago against the Texans and an offensive explosion last week against the Colts, a let down is coming for Pittsburgh. The Ravens have been playing well and will continue to this week. I expect the Ravens to win this game pretty comfortably.

**Upset Alert**

Arizona Cardinals +4 at Dallas Cowboys

I was wrong about this Cardinals team who has been really good this season. They are 6-1 straight up, but more importantly 5-2 against the spread. They have been good on both sides of the ball, including the front seven, despite dealing with big injuries. The secondary has been an issue for the Cardinals, who are 32nd against the pass and may be without Patrick Peterson this week. The Cowboys have remained focused on running the ball, which has served them well, however i expect Arizona to slow the run game and force Tony Romo to throw. The Cardinals will not only cover this game but win outright.
