College Football Picks Against the Spread: Week 7, 2014

Bryce Petty

My College Football Picks Against the Spread started off positively, despite an early loss from the University of Tennessee, who looked downright awful against the Florida Gators. Notre Dame sealed their victory with a late score and TCU, my upset alert pick won outright. With Michigan State leading 27-7 late against Nebraska, i was feeling good about a 3-2 week. Unfortunately, I watched Sparty proceed to give the game away. A late field goal could have landed the cover and they were unable to put it through the uprights. I’m going to put a less than ideal 2-3 week behind me and improve for week 7. This week I will include a Friday Night Special to get the weekend kicked off right.

A week ago the state of Mississippi was electric. Both the University of Mississippi and Mississippi State were hosting massive SEC clashes with Oxford hosting ESPN’s College GameDay. As much jubilation as the state had a week ago, they will not be nearly as electrified with both schools having huge match ups.

Season Total 12-12-1
Upset Alert 3-3

Friday Night Special

Washington State Cougars +17 at Stanford Cardinal

This game features a strength versus strength on both sides of the football. Stanford offensively, struggles to move the football against a Washington State that couldn’t make a defensive stop to save their life. When Washington State has the ball they can produce eye popping numbers being led by quarterback Connor Halliday. He set a FBS record a week ago against Cal with 734 yards passing. Stanford hangs their hat on the defensive side of the ball. While i expect the Washington State offense to be slowed, i think they keep it a one score game and have a shot at winning outright.

Saturday’s slate

Texas Christian Horned Frogs +8 at Baylor Bears

A week ago i predicted an outright win for TCU hosting Oklahoma, which they were able to pull off. A week later they head to Waco to take on a very talented Baylor Bears football team. While i’m not predicting another upset win, I do think the Horned Frogs are strong enough on both sides of the ball to make this game a close one. Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty will need to play better this week if he wants to get this win at home.

Auburn Tigers -3 at Mississippi State Bulldogs

A week ago Mississippi State won convincingly at home against a strong Texas A&M team. This win vaulted them up the rankings, however a week later they welcome a really good Auburn Tigers team that cruised past LSU a week ago. As much fun as last week was for Starkvegas, this weeks match up will be too much. Nick Marshall and company are rolling. They will win this game and cover the spread.

Oregon Ducks -2 ⅓ at UCLA Bruins

The Oregon Ducks offensive line is a mess and it showed up big time against the University of Arizona a week ago. This line feels like it should be higher but Oregon’s loss in prime time has adjust. UCLA also lost last week to a Utah team that is good but not on the level of Arizona. I expect Oregon and Marcus Mariota to bounce back in a major way this week, even on the road. The Ducks should win this game convincingly, helping to keep them in the National Championship picture.

Arizona Wildcats +2.5 vs University of Southern California Trojans

The team that won a massive game in Autzen Stadium a week ago, heads home to take on a USC team that lost on what is now being referred to as ‘Jael Mary’, after wide receiver, Jalen Strong made an outstanding catch and found the end zone as time expired. USC will be looking to redeem themselves this week after such a crushing loss, however going to Tucson will be a huge challenge for the Trojans. I don’t typically like to take a team that won a massive game the week before but Arizona feels like the right side, which hurts as someone who roots for ASU. However when picking games, one must leave their allegiances at the door of the sports book. The Arizona Wildcats seem to be hitting their stride and could the the PAC 12 South representative in Levis Stadium come December.

**Upset Alert**

Arkansas Razorbacks +9 vs Alabama Crimson Tide

This is a tricky spot for Alabama coming off an upset a week ago against University of Mississippi. Once again the Tide find themselves on the road against a strong opponent. Arkansas can run the ball and play good enough defense to keep this game close. Going against Nick Saban and Alabama is a tricky proposition. The Crimson Tide until last season had never lost back to back games and have never done it in the regular season. Alabama lost to Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl after losing to Auburn in the last game of the season. Alabama will lose another road game this week.
