NFL Picks Against the Spread: Week 6, 2014

Matthew Stafford

Week 6, in my NFL Picks Against the Spread, features inter-division clashes, aerial displays and defensive battles. Week 5 was a less than ideal week, but my upset alert came through in a big way. The Patriots were impressive in a bounce back performance against the Cincinnati Bengals. I went 2-3 overall for the week, but look to make Week 6, a strong one.

>Season Total – 9-16

>Upset Alert – 1-4

Detroit Lions -1 ½ at Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings are expected to get Teddy Bridgewater back for Sundays game against the Detroit Lions. It will be a much welcomed return after the way their offense looked a week ago against the Packers. The Detroit Lions will likely be without Calvin Johnson, who is nursing a high ankle sprain. Typically there is a fall off for the Lions when they are without Johnson, however the addition of Golden Tate should help the receiving core. The Lions are also expected to get Joique Bell back. I expect the Lions to win this game on the road by at least a field goal.

Carolina Panthers +7 at Cincinnati Bengals

As bad as the Bengals looked on Sunday night, i expect a much improved performance from the Bengals. However they will be without wide receiver A.J. Green, who left practice on a cart Wednesday with a sprained toe. He will likely miss this game. The Panthers haven’t looked great thus far, but seemed to be improving as the season moves along. Another week of Cam Newton getting healthier and developing with his receivers should help.  I expect the Bengals to do enough offensively to win but the Panthers will cover the 7 point spread.

Atlanta Falcons -3 v Chicago Bears

The Atlanta Falcons have become a Jekyll and Hyde team. They look great when they play at home, but for one reason or another can’t take what they do at home, on the road. The Falcons are home in this match up against the Bears who are not strong on the defensive side of the ball. I expect the Falcons to cover at home in a game that should be a shootout. The total for this game is 53 ½ and I like the over.

San Diego Chargers -7 at Oakland Raiders

This game in theory should be an easy pick as the Chargers have been impressive the past few weeks, while the Raiders new coach Tony Sparano is burying a football during the bye week, in an effort to put the first four weeks behind them. The bye week should help the Raiders and they seem to play well at random times against division foes, however the Chargers are too strong of a team to not cover, even on the road. The Chargers will win this game by double digits.

**Upset Alert**

Houston Texans +3.5 vs Indianapolis Colts

I love, love, love taking home underdogs in prime time match ups. Home underdogs have covered 3 of the last 4 primetime games. The Texans have a very good front seven led by JJ Watt and will be going against a less than stellar Colts offensive line. As impressive as quarterback Andrew Luck is, i think the Texans find a way to not only cover but win outright at home. Arian Foster should have an impressive game against a weak Colts defense.
