Eliminator Challenge

Welcome to the fifth week of eliminator breakdown. While the Steelers weren’t able to pull off what should have been an easy victory, thankfully our main pick the San Diego Chargers were able to take care of business at home. While I would have preferred to be 2-0, we’ll take what we can get. Let’s get ready for week five! Read on and feel free to comment at the bottom.

Step 1 – Avoid Division Matchups

Very few people were able to predict the Giants would pull out a victory on the road in the nation’s capital last Thursday. Even less people expected them to win by more than four touchdowns. Every week there seems to be one division matchup that surprises us all. Do yourself a favor and avoid the below division games:

  • Minnesota at Green Bay
  • Tampa Bay at New Orleans

Step 2 – Avoid Marquee Matchups

This past week might have been the best example of why I always try to avoid these marquee matchups. Did you predict the Cowboys would beat the Saints by 21 points? How about the fact that the Kansas City Chiefs would give the Patriots one of their worst losses in the Belichick era. Let’s also not forget that the Giants won convincingly in prime time as well. Unless you want to take a chance I would avoid the below marquee games:

  • Cincinnati at New England
  • Seattle at Washington

Step 3 – Avoid Picking Against Home Field Advantage

On Sunday there were ten games being played across the county, not counting the one being played in London. Of those ten games, only three were won by the away team, and those victors included the Packers and Lions. On Monday night we saw the true value of home field advantage as the Chiefs home crowd won back the record for loudest stadium while helping their team demolish the Patriots. Be aware and avoid the below games where the favorite is the away team:

  • Pittsburgh at Jacksonville

Step 4 – Make your pick!

Normally I don’t like to pick against teams coming off a bye week. They have two full weeks to prepare for their next opponent and could have an upper hand that you aren’t prepared for. That being said, the Philadelphia Eagles are coming off a tough loss at the hands of the 49ers and Chip Kelly is too good of a coach to let his team start spiraling downwards. I expect the Eagles to rebound this week against the talent-deficient Rams, a team that got blown out by the Vikings earlier this season. My pick of the week is:

Philadelphia over St. Louis

Other options I like this week:

Detroit over Buffalo

I don’t think Kyle Orton is the answer in Buffalo, and if Calvin is healthy he is going to have a monster game in front of his home crowd.

San Diego over NY Jets

If you didn’t pick the Chargers last week, feel free to ride with them this week. They should be able to easily handle the slumping Jets in sunny San Diego.
