Eliminator Breakdown – NFL Week 2

Eliminator Challenge

Eliminator

Welcome to the second week of Eliminator Breakdown. Last week I gave you three teams to choose from between Chicago, Philadelphia, and the New York Jets. While two of those teams were victorious last week, one sadly was not. For those of you who went with my top pick of Chicago I sincerely apologize. While they were able to get the game into overtime, they just couldn’t execute when they needed it most. For those still alive, let’s get things going!

Step 1 – Avoid Division Matchups

My favorite example of why you shouldn’t pick division matchups is when the 2008 Dolphins upset the dominant 2008 Patriots. Well, guess what happened this past Sunday. The Miami Dolphins once again proved that division games are very unpredictable as they gave Tom Brady and the Patriots their first opening game loss since 2003. Outside of the Dolphins game, every other division game last Sunday was decided by less than one touchdown. Do yourself a favor and avoid the below division games:

  • Pittsburgh at Baltimore
  • Miami at Buffalo
  • Kansas City at Denver

Step 2 – Avoid Marquee Matchups

While you may have been able to predict last week’s marquee matchups, that doesn’t mean they are all safe go forward. Some teams know how to perform on a national stage, while other teams welt in front of the bright lights. Unless you want to take a chance, I would avoid the below games:

  • Chicago at San Francisco
  • Philadelphia at Indianapolis

Step 3 – Avoid Picking Against Home Field Advantage

There is a reason why most betting services give the home team a three point advantage on the betting line. That is because many teams play on a different level when they are in front of their home crowd. Similar to the success we saw in Miami, other heroics were seen in Atlanta, New York, Denver, and we all know how dominant Seattle is at home. Don’t fight jetlag and avoid the below games where the away team is favored to win:

  • New England at Minnesota
  • New Orleans at Cleveland
  • Seattle at San Diego
  • Houston at Oakland

Step 4 – Make your pick!

Last season the New York Jets were a roller coaster of a team. One week they would win, the next they would lose. It was almost a guarantee. After a victory last week over the Oakland Raiders, the Jets now travel to Green Bay to play the Packers. The Packers are not ready to start their season 0-2 and with a long week to prepare, they should be more than ready for Geno Smith and the Jets. My pick of the week is:

  • Green Bay Packers over NY Jets

Other options I like:

  • Tampa Bay over St. Louis

Lovie Smith is too good of a coach to start 0-2 and the St. Louis Rams are struggling greatly with no viable QB in sight.

  • Carolina over Detroit

Carolina proved last week that their defense hasn’t lost a step. Add in Cam Newton and Carolina could start the season 2-0 in front of their home crowd.
