NFL 2014 First Round Draft: 5 IDP Players To Watch

It was exhausting waiting for Johnny Manziel to get selected.  And all the Johnny Football Hype overlooked what was most important.  It’s about the defense baby!  So here are the five defensive players you want to keep on your fantasy football radar.  nfldraft

5. Jadeveon Clowney, DE,  Houston Texans

Clowney is a no brainer.  He will be a dynasty and IDP darling.  Yes, he will be paired besides the great J.J. Watt.  Temper your expectations.  Clowney will get some, but will he get his?  Remember the scheme is not the best for him.  But come on it’s Clowney, he will get his.

4. Jason Verrett, CB, San Diego Chargers

I have been aboard the Verrett bandwagon since seeing him at the NFL Combine.  Then watching his film, it was IDP lust.  Verrett is small, he weighs in at a generous 5’10” and 175 pounds.  Don’t be fooled.  Verrett hits hard. Verrett covers.  And now he is in a division that will let his skills shine.

3. Ryan Shazier, LB, Pittsburgh Steelers

Shazier was a great pick for the Steelers. The Steelers had some holes to fill.   He is now in the hands of Dick LeBeau.  I like those odds.

2. Ha-Ha Clinton Dix, S, Green Bay Packers

This is mostly a need based evaluation.  The Packers defense wasn’t good last year.  Dix should see lots of playing times.  And with the Packers’ offense being what it is, chances are teams will be playing from behind.  That means lots of chances for Dix.

1. Khalil Mack, LB, Oakland Raiders

Mack is arguably the best defensive player in the draft.  He fell into the Raiders’ lap.  Mack will start.  And unfortunately the Raiders’ defense spends plenty of time on the field.

Mack has a chip on his shoulder.  He is out to prove he is better than Clowney.  Lots of field time, a chip on his shoulder that can only equal lots of fantasy points for you!

The first round is over.  There are fantasy points to be had.  Don’t sleep on the rookies, they will keep your fantasy team afloat.
