by Adam Rainbolt On September 30, 2013

With Minny, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and Washington on byes in Week 5, dont be caught sleeping when it comes to this week’s waiver wire.

Quarterbacks

MUST ADD

Bryan Hoyer, Cleveland Browns

Owned in 1.2% of ESPN Leagues

Week 4 Stats: 269 yards passing, 2 touchdowns

After two 18-point weeks, could it be that the Browns are actually putting something together?

Matt Cassel, Minnesota Vikings

Owned in 0.7% of ESPN Leagues

Week 4 Stats: 248 yards passing, 2 touchdowns

Is Cassel an exciting player? No. Will he do the job as a cheap, bye-week replacement? Yes. Who knows, maybe he keeps the job going forward and adds a little value to your bench. Cassel is on bye, so you can even look to pick him up next Tuesday.

AVOID

Ryan Fitzpatrick – Despite TEN QB Jake Locker sidelined for 6-8 weeks, Fitzpatrick isnt worth a roster spot except as a flyer in the deepest of leagues.

Matt Flynn – Flynn is doing what he does best; keeping the seat warm as the starter prepares to come back.

Running Backs

MUST ADD

Rashad Jennings, Oakland Raiders

Owned in 0.9% of ESPN leagues

Week 4 Stats: 15/45 rushing and 8/71 receiving

With Darren McFadden injuried again, Jennings should get plenty of run in Oakland.

Danny Woodhead, San Diego Chargers

Owned in 0.9% of ESPN leagues

Week 4 Stats: Week 4 Stats: 5/32 rushing and 5/54/2 receiving

San Diego has proven these first four games that they can score with the best of them (#7 in points per game) and Woodhead looked sharp in Week 4.

Roy Helu, Washington

Owned in 0.9% of ESPN leagues

Week 4 Stats: 13/41/1 rushing and 2/43 receiving

Alfred Morris’ (rib) pain was Helu’s gain in Week 4 and Roy is worth a quick pickup to see if that continues in the near term.

Wide Receivers

MUST ADD

Nate Washington, Tennessee Titans

Owned in 17.2% of ESPN leagues

Week 4 Stats: 4 catches for 105 yards and 2 touchdowns (8 targets)

With Locker out, Fitzpatrick will need a steady target and Washington appears to be that player.

Robert Woods, Buffalo Bills

Owned in 4.8% of ESPN Leagues

Week 4 Stats: 4 catches for 80 yards and a touchdown.

With teams #1 cornerback zoning in on teammate Stevie Johnson, Woods will have plenty of opportunities to touch the football.

Jerricho Cotchery, Pittsburgh Steelers

Owned in 0.3% of ESPN Leagues

Week 4 Stats: 5 catches for 103 yards and a touchdown

OK, so 16 points scored in Week 4 is great and all, but Cotchery hasnt been too shabby the other three weeks either, scoring 9, 9 and 5. No game for him in Week 5, but would be a nice add if you have the roster space.

Streamin’ Defenses
Buffalo (@ Cleveland)
Cleveland (vs Buffalo)
St Louis (vs Jacksonville)
San Diego (@ Oakland)

Good luck this week and feel free to suggest your waiver-wire adds in the comments below!

Chris Johnson signs with Jets

Chris Johnson has agreed to a 2- year  deal with the New York Jets.  It is my guess he is on a trial basis, working on an incentive program.  The quarterback situation is ambiguous, so the Jets look to lean on the ground game.  Johnson will join Chris Ivory in the backfield in what looks to be another NFL platoon. CJ2k is an intriguing pick in fantasy land.

Andre Brown signs with the Texans

Andre Brown is headed to Houston to join the Texans. Brown is an intriguing player that saw his season derailed due to injury in 2013. As a back up to Arian Foster, he will have flex value certain weeks. Brown should see a decent amount of carries. Training camp will give indication on what the split may be. In addition he could see regular snaps if Foster were to miss any significant time, Brown would have tremendous value.

Mike Williams traded to the Bills

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have traded Mike Williams to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for a 6th round draft pick this year. While 2013 was a major disappointment for Williams, he has shown flashes of being a productive receiver in both 2010 and 2012 when he tallied 900+ yards with 9 and 11 touchdowns respectively. He should compete for starting time with Robert Woods and Steve Johnson. Assuming Manuel can stay healthy, Williams could bounce back in 2014.

Hunter Pence

Hunter Pence continued to struggle on Sunday afternoon, going 0 for 3 with a strikeout. He is hitting .157 on the season. Pence could be dropped in the lineup or get a couple of days off to help him get back on track.

Martin Perez

Martin Perez threw eight scoreless innings on Sunday against the Astros. Perez induced four double plays on Sunday, which helped his cause. He makes for a interesting spot starter for your fantasy teams depending on the matchup, but he is not one to count on. Perez is sporting a 2.70 ERA through three starsts this season.

Jonathan Villar

Jonathan Villar went 0 for 2 on Sunday. His time as the Astros shortstop may be coming to end much sooner than expected, with Carlos Correa waiting. Villar had nice buy-low potential coming into the season with the ability to steal a lot of bases. However, if he continues to struggle with the bat he could lose playing time.

Samir Nasri, Manchester United – MIdfielder

Hosting the last place Sunderland at Etihad on Wednesday, City was looking to keep pace with Liverpool and Chelsea in the race for the title. Getting off to a quick start with Fernandinho scoring just 2 minutes into the match, it looked as if they were on their way to doing so. But, an inspired Black Cats club netted the next two goals in the match as City found themselves down 1-2 as the match wound down. Nasri rescued a point for his club with a goal in the 88th minute to equalize 2-2.

Connor Wickham, Sunderland – Forward

Staring relegation in the face, Sunderland took home a 2-2 draw from Etihad stadium on Wednesday night. Conceding a goal early to Manchester City, Sunderland buckled down and gave City quite the scare. After only scoring 1 goal in his first 37 appearances, unlikely hero Wickham picked up two second half goals in a matter of 10 minuted to give the Black Cats the lead. Emanuele Giaccherini picked up the assists on both goals. Sunderland looked to be on the way home with an essential three points, but a late goal from Samir Nasri that trickled off Vito Mannone forced …

Kevin Mirallas, Everton – Midfielder

Looking to keep pace with Arsenal in the battle for 4th place in the table, Everton played their game in hand on Wednesday when they hosted a hot Crystal Palace club at Goodison Park. Trailing 0-1 into the second half, Everton conceded a second goal before Steven Naismith finally put The Toffees on the board in the 61st minute. Palace’s Cameron Jerome netted the eventual match-winner, but Mirallas gave Everton hope of a draw when he scored with 4 minutes remaining. Everton now need help from Arsenal in the form of a loss to keep their Champions League hopes alive.
